Good Start to the Season
Welcome back to another Sports Monster basketball league! The winter league is by far the most competitive and robust league throughout the year. This season we have six coed and six men’s teams that will all be playing on Monday nights. The top five teams in each division will make playoffs. Since we have 12 teams and limited amount of playing space, we will also be playing at the Hamilton courts in Gates Fieldhouse. Next week, there will be three courts going. If you are scheduled to play at Hamilton, you will have to take the elevator on the northern end of the building to the 2nd Floor. Exit the elevator and turn left. Take another left and you’ll see the propped open door.

In Men’s Action, Against All Odds took down the Suits of Smash by thirty points. The Suits looked pretty rusty. I have definitely seen them play better ball. Against All Odds transferred to the Rec league after having a disappointing fall season in the Intermediate league-winning only one game. This big win puts an early target on their back.

In the second game, Strive For Greatness also implemented the mercy rule. They took down Dubbert & Associates. Both teams are new to Sports Monster.

Next week, we’ll get to see the high intensity High Octane and What’s Up Broe?

In the Coed league, the Porchlight Low Flyers beat Shoot to Thrill in a rough game. Both teams looked pretty green. We can expect that both teams will have a different look by the end of the season. In the second game, the Regulatorz took down Village BC. This was a pretty tight game with both teams playing pretty good ball. It has been a year since Village BC took the court, but they looked pretty good. The Regulatorz are a new team consisting of free agents, but many of them have played with and against each other from the fall season. They are definitely one of the teams to beat.

Next week, the Bob Sagets and the second free agent team will play for the first time.

Also, the Pioneer Bar is this league’s sponsor bar. Make sure to go there after the games to get Sports Monster specials!

Eleven Games Were Played!
We had the most basketball games played in one day in Sports Monster history! Ten out of the twelve teams played double headers. Against All Odds and High Octane were the only men’s teams to win both of their games. The Bob Sagets made their debut, and were the only coed team to win both of their games.

Shoot To Thrill and Village BC were the only two teams that didn’t have a double header. Kevin P led the way and helped his team get the victory.

Playoff Seeds are Forming
The regular season is coming to an end, with only one week left. In yesterday’s games, What’s Up Broe? defeated Suits of Smash to improve to (4-3) on the year. The Suits will finish their season at (0-7).

High Octane improved to (4-1) and moved into second place with their win over Strive for Greatness. Strive ends their regular season at (5-2) and will have to wait to see how Octane does next week to see where their playoff seed ends up.

In coed action, Village BC defeated the falling Bob Sagets. The Sagets looked to be a front runner at the beginning of the year, jumping out to a (3-0) record. Since then, they have gone (0-2-1). Village BC improves to (4-1) and sits in second place.

In the last game, the Deruglators had a last minute forfeit. Their loss drops them to (2-4-1). They will enter the playoffs with the fifth seed. The win went to the Regulatorz who are not (5-1) and leading the pack.

Playoffs are right around the Corner
The last week of the regular season is in the books. High Octane was able to win both games yesterday to improve to (6-1). They will be the number one seed heading into the playoffs. Against All Odds and Dubbert & Associates both lost to High Octane. Ironically, they will play each other for the play-in game to start the playoffs.

In the coed league, the Regulatorz won their game to improve to (6-1) and are currently sitting in first place. But Village BC and Porchlight will play Tuesday night to finish off the regular season. If Village BC can get the victory, then they will be the number one seed. If Porchlight can win, then they will take the third seed, which will put them one round closer to the championship.

The Spring Leagues have been posted, so make sure you register as soon as possible. Spots are much more limited in the Spring as opposed to the Winter.

Playoffs Underway!
Not a pretty site for the play-in games. So Porchlight advanced to the semifinals to face Village BC. In the Men’s, Dubbert advanced to play High Octane.

In the Men’s semifinal, the top seeded High Octane ran away from Dubbert & Associates. But it was a pretty close game, as they Octane only won by 11. Octane will advance to the championship to play the winner of Strive For Greatness and What’s Up Broe?

In the Coed semifinal, Village BC defeated Porchlight by 15 points. These two teams just played last week, so the tension was high. But in the end, the one seeded Village BC advanced to the championship. They will take on the winner of the Regulatorz and Bob Sagets next week.

High Octane and Bob Sagets Win Titles
What a finish to the Winter Season! In the first game of the night, it was the #2 Regulatorz taking on the #3 Bob Sagets. Michael O’Brien led the way for the Sagets, as he was the player of the game. The Sagets won the game by nine points to advance to the championship.

In the championship, The Bob Sagets kept rolling. They got up 20-6 on the top seeded Village BC. Village BC would come back to make it closer, but the Sagets proved to be too much. Ben S would take home the player of the game. This is Bob Sagets first title!

In the Men’s league, What’s Up Broe? knocked off Strive For Greatness on a last second buzzer-beater. Mr. “Do it All” Johnson was player of the game. They would face High Octane in the championship.

What’s Up Broe? played a great 38 minute game. They were up by ten points with seven minutes remaining in the game. But that’s when High Octane started to come back. It was a slow comeback as they were still 6 points down with a few minutes remaining. But they were able to capitalize on the fouling strategy and tie the game up. With the game tied at 50, High Octane mistakenly fouled to put Broe back on the line. Broe made one of the free throws to take the 50-51 lead. High Octane came down and scored on a ten foot baseline floater at the buzzer to win the game. Congratulations to High Octane on their Winter championship.

Thanks for playing! The Spring season is right around the corner. Make sure to sign up by March 15 to get the $50 early-bird discount.
